When you love horses, ensuring that your horse is happy and healthy is paramount. While there have been great advances in modern veterinary medicine, the fact remains that many horses suffer from chronic pain and soundness problems that are not always possible to resolve or adequately manage with a conventional medical approach alone. Other horses suffer from chronic conditions such as persistent coughs, headshaking, hormonal imbalances, etc that are difficult to diagnose and treat succesfully. These issues can manifest in a variety of behaviour, training and performance problems.
A horse’s conformation and suitability for its intended career are also vital factors that affect a horse’s health and soundness. While it would be nice if every horse had perfect conformation for its intended job, the reality is that many horses are being asked to move and work in a manner that is not suited to their build or the horse is not ridden and trained in a way best suited to its individual conformation to achieve long term soundness.
This complex interaction of conformation, style of riding and training and potential underlying conditions can make the task, of keeping a horse healthy and happy, difficult for horse owners. It can also make it difficult if you are looking to purchase a new horse. Having a thorough pre-purchase examination performed by an experienced equine vet is highly recommended to check for existing physical issues. In addition, a thorough biomechanics and training assessment can provide you with additional information, whether you are looking at a new prospect or trying to find and resolve the underlying cause of your horse’s soundness, training or behavioural problems.
Expanding their knowledge and understanding of equine biomechanics and soundness effects on training and behaviour issues has been a natural process for AMT Equestrian. Having dealt with and resolved many issues in their own horses, this awareness now permeates AMT Equestrian’s work with all horses. AMT Equestrian work closely with other equine professionals to help horses and their owners navigate these vital components of successful Horsemanship.
